Skin cancer on the feet can be especially dangerous due to delayed diagnosis. Many people don’t think to check their soles, heels, or between the toes for abnormal changes. What’s more, skin cancers in these areas may not be linked to sun exposure at all. Some develop from long-standing wounds, chronic inflammation or previous trauma.
Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, can appear as a dark spot or streak under the toenail or a mole that changes shape or colour. It’s often mistaken for a bruise, verruca, fungal infection, or simply ignored until it becomes painful or starts to bleed. By that stage, treatment can become more complex.
