May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, a timely reminder that while we often protect our faces and arms from the sun, our feet are frequently neglected. At Surrey Foot Service, we’re dedicated to promoting whole-foot health including raising awareness of how skin cancer on the feet can go unnoticed.

Why Skin Cancer on the Feet is Often Missed

Skin cancer on the feet can be especially dangerous due to delayed diagnosis. Many people don’t think to check their soles, heels, or between the toes for abnormal changes. What’s more, skin cancers in these areas may not be linked to sun exposure at all. Some develop from long-standing wounds, chronic inflammation or previous trauma.

Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, can appear as a dark spot or streak under the toenail or a mole that changes shape or colour. It’s often mistaken for a bruise, verruca, fungal infection, or simply ignored until it becomes painful or starts to bleed. By that stage, treatment can become more complex.

Common Symptoms to Look Out For

When checking your feet, here are some signs that should not be ignored:

  • A new or changing mole or lesion
  • A sore that doesn’t heal
  • Dark streaks under the toenail (not linked to trauma)
  • Lumps, nodules or raised areas that itch or bleed
  • Persistent cracking, dryness, or discolouration on one area of skin
If you notice any of these changes, it’s crucial to seek a professional opinion as soon as possible.

How a Podiatrist Can Help

At Surrey Foot Service, we’re trained to spot abnormalities that might go unnoticed. During a routine foot check, we assess the skin and nails for unusual changes. If anything concerning is identified, we can refer you for further investigation with a dermatologist.
Early intervention can drastically improve treatment outcomes. Treatment might include surgical excision, cryotherapy, or topical treatments depending on the type and stage.

Protecting Your Feet from Skin Cancer

Preventative care is key. We recommend:

  • Applying SPF 30 or higher to your feet, especially the tops and toes
  • Wearing protective footwear in sunny weather
  • Performing monthly self-checks
  • Attending regular podiatry appointments if you’re at higher risk
You can learn more about foot health and cancer from Cancer Research UK and the British Association of Dermatologists
